I am at the National Gallery in London, this is a great museum with floors from -2 to 2, admission is free, has 66 rooms with paintings from 1250 to 1900 a.c, about 2,300 paintings, also has a theater, a bar, cafe and a restaurant. I’m in room 45 (floor numeber 2), this room is devoted to Post-Impressionism, more particulary the paintings of Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. The room is small, the walls are lilac, there are three doors with frames in granite, the door of wood is painted black, the floor is wooden. The light comes from six large windows in the vaulted ceiling and a few light bulbs. The ceiling is of white marble with some effects in low relief. The paintings are sealed so that no one can touch them. Near one of the doors is a description in a metallic support about the context of the classroom, a brief explanation of the two artists in question, I read the document. The atmosphere is relaxed, there is only one lady sitting in one of the two existing wooden benches in the middle of the room, she’s resting, and a gentleman painting with oil inks a copy of Les Grandes Baigneuses. Many people pass from time to time, circumventing the room and continueing the way for the rest of the rooms without paying much attention to the metal support. There is also a security guard sitting in a black chair.

The main action on reading is mainly informational and educational in the sense that serves to guide and explain the context of each room. Is also present in the gallery reading signage to guide us, the space was also created in order to enable us comfort to a reading of any other type of personal books.

Apart from reading it is possible to draw, paint, see the exhibits, theaters, talk, eat, rest, among others.

People move in space acording to the destination desired or more convenient acording to the service they want to use (see exhibits, have a coffee, buy some books, go to the theater …). May be routine or not.

The gallery is open to the public daily from 10 a.m to 6 p.m and Fridays from 10 a.m to 9 p.m. During this period the people come and go and stay within the desired time, there is no limit within hours of opening.

No, the actors can not change the space.

18. Quali sono gli aspetti positivi (relativi al libro/lettura e non) di questo contesto? E quelli negativi?

The positives are that people could be clarified to some possible questions about the exposure, or if they bring their own book, they can enjoy a quiet space for reading. Or they can acquire them in the museum shop. For the negative aspects, the comfort os the benches in the rooms could be improved, a few informative panels also pass over unnoticed (in the metal support).

19. Come questo contesto potrebbero essere migliorato, reso più idoneo, più funzionale, più efficace ad usi relativi al libro/lettura?

The situation could be improved if the wooden benches were replaced with more confortable sofas (some rooms are more confortable than others), if a system of interactive displays were created in the entrence of the rooms in order to replace the metal panels, it will be a way not only to put more information avaiable but also to stimulate more interest in reading.
